My opinion on Japan knife attack at care centre in Sagamihara: from a self-advocate in Taiwan
Mr. YU-CHENG TSENG/ Associate Chairperson of The Seeds of Happiness at Hsinchu Association for Welfare of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities
(translator : Mr. Song-Jin Yang /Parents' Association for Persons with Intellectual Disability, Taiwan (PAPID, Taiwan))
For the attack happened in Sagamihara in Japan,
which has resulted in 19 people dead and 26 people injured,
I felt very sad and angry.
That victim institution was for persons with intellectual disabilities.
Most of the victims were nearly with no capacity to resist and stop the suspect to kill them.
Even worse, the suspect said,
“How nice it would be if there is no person with intellectual disabilities in this world.
I want all persons with disabilities disappear in the world.”
I think this is absolutely DISCRIMINATION!
Although most people see persons with intellectual disabilities
or other kinds of persons with disabilities as freaks,
or they treat us not so nicely,
they didn’t show their discrimination to kill someone.
Besides, still some people choose to accept us, assist us, support us,
and always work on changing other people’s view to persons with intellectual disabilities.
I do hope this incident will never happen again.
I also hope one day the society will not only focus on our disabilities,
but view us as ordinary people,
and realize that we can live independently.
